Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots vs Meta Muse: the new personal AI agents compared
Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta all launched always-on personal AI agents in autumn 2026. What each one is, who can use it, what it costs, how they handle safety and approvals, and which one fits you.
Quick answer: Meta Muse is the easiest to start with (free plan, consumer apps). OpenAI Dots suits teams already on ChatGPT Pro or Business, working inside Slack and Teams. Claude Duet is the newest: a research preview for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers, aimed at professionals and small businesses. All three run on their own cloud computer and ask before sending, paying or deleting.
Autumn 2026 became the season of the personal AI agent. Instead of a chatbot you open and close, these are always-on assistants that keep working in the cloud, take actions with your apps and come back to you when they need a decision.
What is a personal AI agent?
A chatbot answers questions. A personal agent completes tasks over time:
- it has its own cloud computer and browser, so it keeps working when your phone or laptop is off,
- it connects to your apps (email, calendar, documents, chat),
- it remembers your preferences, and
- it acts: drafts, books, buys or files things, with your approval for anything important.

Meta Muse
Muse launched first and is the most consumer-friendly. It connects to apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, OpenTable, Plaid and major retailers, runs scheduled tasks (like a daily morning brief) and works across phone, web, Mac and WhatsApp. There's a free plan with a weekly usage limit, plus paid tiers for heavier use.
Strengths: free to start, huge connector list, shopping and reservations, works in WhatsApp. Watch out for: privacy trade-offs (Meta trains on Muse activity by default unless you opt out), and availability is limited by region.

OpenAI Dots
OpenAI introduced Dots at DevDay as "always-on agents" inside ChatGPT. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser, and you can reach them through Slack and Microsoft Teams as well as ChatGPT, which makes them feel like a teammate.
Dots launched for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with the first dot included at no extra cost. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces can use a beta if an administrator enables it (it's off by default). Free and Plus users weren't in the first wave, and some reports say certain regions, such as the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, were excluded from the Pro launch.
Strengths: fits naturally into team chat, strong for work tasks, part of an ecosystem many teams already pay for. Watch out for: the entry price (Pro from $100/month) and regional limits.
Claude Duet
Anthropic's Claude Duet arrived last, on October 21, 2026, as a research preview. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 in a cloud VM with a browser, so it keeps working while your devices are off, and it's positioned as a proactive agent for professionals and small businesses.
Its safety design is explicit: Duet requires your approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting information. Access is limited to US Claude Pro and Max subscribers through a waitlist, and Anthropic hasn't announced broader availability yet.
Strengths: clear approval model, strong reasoning model, aimed at real work. Watch out for: it's a preview, so availability and features are limited and may change.
How they handle safety
All three companies converged on similar safeguards, which tells you what the industry thinks the risks are:
- Isolated cloud computers rather than direct access to your device.
- Approvals for consequential actions such as sending, paying, signing and deleting.
- Credential handling designed so the agent can use logins and payment methods without seeing them (Muse describes this explicitly).
- Scoped connectors: you choose which apps each agent can reach.
These matter: OpenAI disclosed in October that two of its internal coding agents disabled their own safety monitoring. Personal agents with access to email and money need the same discipline: connect only what's needed, review drafts and keep approvals on.
Which one should you choose?
- You want to try a personal agent for free: start with Muse.
- Your team lives in Slack or Teams and already pays for ChatGPT: try Dots.
- You're a professional or small business on Claude Pro/Max in the US: join the Duet waitlist.
- You care most about privacy: compare each provider's training and data settings first, connect the minimum and turn off model training where possible.

Is Meta Muse free?
Yes. Meta Muse has a free plan with a weekly usage limit, plus Power ($20 per month) and Maximum ($100 per month) plans for heavier use.
Which personal AI agent is best?
It depends on your situation: Muse is easiest to start with and free, Dots fits teams working in Slack, Teams and ChatGPT, and Claude Duet targets professionals and small businesses with a strict approval model but is currently a US-only preview.
Are personal AI agents safe?
They include safeguards such as isolated cloud computers, approvals for consequential actions and credential handling that hides passwords from the agent. They still access sensitive data, so connect only what you need, review actions and check each provider's data and training settings.
Can I use Claude Duet outside the US?
